A
Private Pilot
license will give you the opportunity to fly to over one thousand general aviation airports across the U.S. These airports are often in small communities and cities where commercial air carriers are not available. Take your family on a vacation trip, fly yourself to your next business meeting, or just fly out for lunch.
Who Can Qualify?
The path to becoming a Private Pilot first starts with being a Student Pilot. To be eligible for a Student Pilot certificate you must be at least 16 years old and be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. Flight training can start at any age but you must hold a Student Pilot certificate and be at least 17 years old before you are allowed to fly the airplane solo. You must also have a third class medical certificate which is issued by a FAA medical examiner.
How Much Training Is Required?
The FAA requires you must accumulate a minimum of 40 hours of flight training to obtain the Private Pilot license. The average flight time needed to become a proficient and safe pilot is usually between 50 to 60 hours. It is recommended that you be able to fly at least twice a week with each lesson taking about two hours.
Aeronautical knowledge training (ground school) is also required. You will need to schedule ground instruction time either before your flight time or another day during the week. It is best to take a few weeks of ground instruction prior to beginning your flight training.
Once you have finished your training you will be required to take a practical test (check ride) with the FAA as well as a FAA written exam before you are issued your Private Pilot license.
