How Do I Start?
A good way to determine if flying is right for you is to schedule a Discovery Flight. A Discovery Flight is an introduction to flying. You and an instructor will spend an initial half hour in the classroom going over procedures for handling the airplane both on the ground and in flight. Then it is out to the airplane to fly! You will be given an opportunity to take the controls—right from the start—and discover the thrill of flying!
What Then?
If you decide to continue, that first Discovery Flight is your first lesson—and goes in your official flight log! Flight training then usually proceeds toward the Private Pilot Certificate. General Eligibility Requirements state you must be at least 17 years of age; be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language; and hold an FAA Medical Certificate*.
Minimum flight time required in your training is 40 hours of flight that includes at least 20 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor and 10 hours of solo flight training. You must pass a written knowledge test and a practical test often referred to as a flight test or “check ride.”
Although the FAA only requires 40 total hours of flight time before you can take your check ride, the average time required is approximately 60 to 70 hours. The number of hours needed to gain the necessary skills to be a competent pilot will vary from person to person.
